A LEARNING CURVE

A few days later, almost everyone had returned to Glasgow, and Patsy knew she had to face the music again too.

‘I’m coming home today, Larry; there is nothing else I can do here until the decorators and workmen go into the salon.’ Patsy’s voice sounded like treacle pouring down the phone, but it seemed to satisfy his vanity, even though he complained that she never answered his texts. Each complaint set her teeth on edge, but she sweetly appeased him, all the while cursing him under her breath.

Sheila and Victoria sat opposite her, listening, and they were there not only for moral support, but to prompt her to be nice if her temper got the better of her. Ending the call, Patsy sighed. ‘Jeez, that was hard work. What am I going to do when I face him?’

‘You will think of something Patsy, you always do,’ Victoria chimed in. ‘Just step back and take a breath before you do anything else.’

Emma joined them for their morning coffee. ‘Just dump him Patsy and to hell with the consequences. He’s a rattle snake; no one blackmails someone into marrying them. I haven’t told your father the full story because he will wage war, but I know the truth… Victoria told me,’ she confessed.

Seeing that Patsy wanted to change the subject, Sheila let out a huge sigh. ‘I’ve heard from Angus; it seems his work has believed his story. After all, he has worked for them for years and nothing has ever gone missing before; he’s a trusted employee.’

‘Is that all he said?’ asked Patsy. ‘Did he say anything about the two of you and your future together?’

‘Well, he has gone back to the house and collected the girls from Maggie, so I suppose that sounds promising, although I do feel I’m going to have one of those heart to hearts you had with your father Patsy. I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. Anyway, I don’t know what you think about this, so don’t fly off the handle, but why don’t you try and contact Freddie? You want to know what happened and Fin still isn’t up to it yet, so why not get the truth from the horse’s mouth? Surely it’s worth a try?’

‘No, I’m going to wait for Fin first. Freddie can only tell me half a story and I want Fin’s version, too. I am popping to see him before I leave. Where’s your car Victoria? Have you managed to find it yet?’

‘Yes, your fantastic dad has sorted it. Drove me up there, even though it was on bricks. Someone had pinched all the tyres. So we called the rescue service which seems a little ironic, given the circumstances, and they have towed it home to Dorset. I will catch the train home. It’s not a problem. The news reports are still digging into that pub business.’ Victoria didn’t want to call it a massacre or shootout, even though that was what it was. ‘I’m surprised no one has mentioned your name, Patsy.
